Getting started
How many recipes can I have for free?
Ten at a time (dishes and base preparations together), with every feature. Ingredients and menu items are unlimited. Deleting a recipe frees its slot. A single purchase of US$24.99 unlocks unlimited recipes forever. There's no subscription.
What does "usable yield" mean?
How much of what you buy is left after cleaning and trimming. If 1 kg of onion gives you 900 g ready to use, the yield is 90%. Recipe amounts are usable amounts, so Margena charges the trimmed part to the recipe.
Why can't Margena convert cups to grams?
A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts, so Margena never guesses. Open the ingredient and turn on Weight of a volume (for example 1 cup = 125 g). For pieces, turn on Weight of one piece.
Recipes
What is a base preparation?
Something you make and then use in other recipes: a salsa, a dough, a marinade. Say what one batch makes (for example 1.2 L) and other recipes can use it by amount (30 ml) or by portions.
What does "cost incomplete" mean?
A line has no price, uses a unit that can't be converted, or uses something that was deleted. That line counts as zero until you fix it, and the warning says which one.
Menu and pricing
How is the suggested price worked out?
Plate cost divided by your target food cost (for example 30%), plus tax if your menu prices include it, rounded up to your price steps (Settings › Round suggested prices).
My menu prices include IVA (or sales tax).
Settings › Tax rate and Menu prices include tax. Margena then takes the tax out before working out food cost and margin.
Moving data and backups
How do I get my recipes onto my iPad or a new device?
Settings › Backup and Export › Back Up Everything. Send the .margena file by AirDrop, Mail or Files and open it on the other device. Choose Merge to add what's new, or Replace to make it match.
Can I import my supplier's price list?
Yes, from a CSV file: Settings › Backup and Export › Import a Price List (CSV). Pick the name and price columns; a pack size and unit column are optional. Matching ingredients get the new price and the old one goes to the price history.
Purchases
I bought Margena on another device. How do I unlock it here?
Settings › Restore Purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account. The purchase covers iPhone and iPad, and your family through Family Sharing.
Your data
Where are my recipes stored?
Only on your device, in Margena's private storage, and in your normal device backup. There's no account and no cloud, so keep a recent .margena backup somewhere safe.
Is Margena accounting software?
No. Costs and suggested prices are estimates from the prices you enter. Margena doesn't produce invoices or nutrition labels.
