Rurru plays soothing sounds for sleep and focus. Every sound is generated live on your device, so it works offline and never loops. There's no account to set up.
Getting started
- Play a sound: tap any sound, or tap a mix like Rainy Night.
- Make your own mix: tap more sounds to layer them. Open Mixer to set each one's volume.
- Save a mix: tap Save current as a mix at the end of the Mixes row.
- Quick options: touch and hold a sound to play it alone or pick a volume.
- Sleep timer: tap Sleep timer and choose a length. The sound fades out gently, then stops.
- Wake-up alarm and bedtime reminder: tap Alarm.
- Baby mode: tap the stroller at the top. Pick a sound, then Start baby mode. Hold the lock for two seconds to unlock.
- Widgets and Siri: add the Rurru widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen, or the Play Last Mix button in Control Center. Say "Play rain in Rurru" to Siri.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep playing when I lock my phone?
Yes. Use the Lock Screen or Control Center to pause or resume.
Does it need the internet or use my data?
No. Rurru never connects to the internet. It works in airplane mode.
It stopped when I unplugged my headphones.
That's on purpose, so sound doesn't suddenly come out of the speaker. To keep playing, turn off Settings › Pause when headphones disconnect.
Can I listen to a podcast or music at the same time?
Yes. Turn on Settings › Play alongside other apps. While it's on, the Lock Screen controls belong to your other app.
What happens with calls and alarms?
Rurru pauses, and it picks up again afterwards when iOS says it's OK to resume. If the sleep timer ran out during the call, it stays off.
Does the silent switch mute it?
No. Like music apps, Rurru keeps playing in silent mode. Use the volume buttons or the in-app volume.
Can I make the fade-out longer or shorter?
Yes: Settings › Fade-out length. On short timers the fade never takes more than a third of the time.
Will it drain my battery?
Generating sound uses very little power. Bedside mode keeps the screen on, which uses more, so leave it off if you're not looking at the clock.
Will the wake-up alarm always ring?
The notification rings at your alarm time as long as notifications are on for Rurru. The gentle rising sound before it needs Rurru to still be running in the background, which it is if you were playing sounds or used the sleep timer. If you close Rurru from the app switcher, or the phone restarts, only the notification sounds, and the ring/silent switch or a Focus can mute it. For an alarm you can't miss, also set one in the Clock app.
What are binaural beats?
Two steady tones, a slightly different one in each ear, that you hear as a soft pulse. They only work with headphones. They're an optional extra for people who like them; we don't make health claims about them. You can hide them in Settings › Show binaural beats.
Is baby mode safe for my baby's ears?
Keep the phone across the room from the crib, not next to your baby's head, and the volume moderate (no louder than a quiet conversation). Baby mode plays until you stop it.
Why do I have to say the app's name to Siri?
iOS sends a bare "play rain" to the Music app. Say "Play rain in Rurru" or "Play Rurru".
How do I rename or delete a saved mix?
Touch and hold the mix. With VoiceOver, use the actions rotor on the mix.
Where are my mixes stored? Can I move them to a new phone?
Only on your device, as part of the app's data. They move to a new iPhone with a device-to-device transfer or an iCloud/computer backup. Deleting the app deletes them.
What's free, and what does the unlock add?
6 sounds (white and brown noise, rain, ocean, fan and heartbeat), 2 at a time, the sleep timer, the alarm, the bedtime reminder and baby mode are free forever. A one-time purchase adds the other 15 sounds and the binaural beats pack, unlimited layers, every ready-made mix, and saving your own mixes. Nothing renews, and Family Sharing is supported.
I bought it on another device (or reinstalled). How do I get it back?
Open Settings › Full version › Restore Purchase while signed in with the same Apple Account.
How do previews work?
Tap any locked sound or mix to hear it for 3 minutes. Each sound gets one preview a day; at the end it fades out gently and you can unlock it or keep using the free sounds. Previews are for trying sounds while you're awake, so the sleep timer and baby mode need free sounds or the unlock: nothing ever stops or pops up after you've fallen asleep, and a preview never interrupts your alarm.
